Backyard Baseball

One of our local CCM stations sponsors free family movies each week for a few weeks each summer. The kids and I have seen a few and one that left its mark was “Everyone’s Hero,” a movie I had never heard of.

You probably have? The one about the kid who tries to find Babe Ruth’s bat after it was stolen? It’s animated?

Both boys had a blast with that one. J left the movie theater swinging an imaginary bat after spending a lot of the time in the theater on the edge of his seat. NM smiled through a lot of it. He smiles at anything that remotely smacks “sports” which is neat to watch.

Yesterday, the boys got paid and NM, who had saved up quite a bit for soccer sports wear and gear, decided instead to buy a bat, some practice balls and a catcher’s mitt. You know why? Not just because it more than smacks of sports, but he wanted to get gear for a sport that his brother would enjoy playing with him. Wow.

“We’re gonna play when we get home, right buddy?” he said when we got in the car.

“Nah, I think I’m gonna play play dough a lil’ bit” says J, who was ecstatic spending only $2 on two Hotwheels then found some play dough and still had money left over. He didn’t think there was reason to go shopping anymore after that.

NM waited patiently—over a half an hour—for his brother to play with his new toys and even played with him. Then helped him clean up. Afterwards, J patiently went outside and played so they could play base ball. He remembers the fun they had two days before when they played baseball with the sprinklers on (family, photos here for you).

After dinner, hubby threw the ball around for the boys, too. That was pure joy!

I wonder if they’re set up the same way in terms of movies they show? I’m curious. What else was showing besides Everybody’s Hero? Around here I think it was Bratz.
