New Things

After a trip to a local big-box-bookstore, we headed to the mailbox.
I was pleased to find we had a nice little package waiting: butterfly larvae.
J’s Auntie J and Uncle Rich and cousin E gave him a butterfly house for his birthday so we were looking forward to seeing the baby butterflies.
They’re tiny, about 1 cm. long, and black and spikey as of day one. We have five little ones, but we’re not sure how many of them are alive. J tells me three are stuck and two aren’t. That just means the three are covered in webbing which is what we want.
“They look like baby caterpillars!” says J. “I’m watching one climb to the top.” I had to ask him what he was doing after I heard him pull up a chair.
Right now, they’re living on the book case near the front door, easy to see from the school room but away from direct light. I wonder how long he’ll sit there and watch them.

Oh, no! Well, if they don’t make it you can always order more.
The first time I did it we were 5 for 5. We did 10 larvae the last time but only 8 made it. They certainly get attached to the little guys!!
