Museum Day

So, since I felt like we were in a school rut (maybe you homeschoolers know what I mean), I decided it would be a good day to take the boys out to see a museum or two.
I’d been wanting to visit the Bob Bullock museum of Texas history for a good, long while. Unfortunately, we didn’t take the time to go see it while we were studying that part of US history. That’s ok, we’re amidst the Civil War and Texas was very much a part of that. We also saw a temporary exhibit on Galveston, TX and the part that great port played in the immigration of many Europeans, Asians and Africans to the United States. The images were very moving and the stories were very similar to those told of Ellis Island, NY.
I took lots of pictures, of course.
We had lunch at Pizza Hut and went back for another look at Texas through the years. Only we went about it backwards. We started at the top during the oil and cattle boom and then down on through the years the Spanish conquistadors walked through Tejas in search of the legendary Cibola and through the evidences of Native American life in these parts.
And I took pictures.
When we hit the second floor (not long before we planned to leave) I was finally approached about pictures. Apparently I wasn’t supposed to be taking any photos in the exhibit area! It wasn’t clearly posted or—I do block well—it didn’t register in my little brain. Oh dear. But I was allowed to take a shot of this:
It made the boys nervous to see me take it. “Mom, don’t drop the camera!” they both said.
Well, that was that. Since it was free admission day at the Blanton, we headed there. It was just across the street so we didn’t even have to move the car (even though that made NM very nervous). We went right on ahead to the upstairs floor where, the docent was nice enough to point out, pictures were allowed. We rushed through there though we lingered a bit in one of the modern art rooms because of the sculptures. NM opted out ouf getting in the “bone room” installation and we all kinda giggled at the “man in the pool” room.
It was so nice to get out and hang out with the boys for a day doing something a little different.
