Nature Explorers Go Spider Hunting

You can, if you want, skip straight to the photos.

Last Friday, our group headed out to Barton Creek Greenbelt, starting the trail at the Zilker Park access point. We were on the hunt for spiders! Or that is, we were supposed to be.

The kids gave a good effort towards the hunt. But, seriously? The challenge of climbing “the mountain” was too great to be ignored.

Barton Creek was full, too, near the trail so the kids did try to find places to cross it.

But the highlight of the hike was really getting to climb. Along that trail, there were a few places where there were natural “steps” that led up small cliffs. The fearless explorers climbed away, apparently unaware of the stomachs of the mommies below being twisted into knots while their faces fought the urge to show fear.

Did we learn about spiders? Yes, we did. J did remember spiders weren’t insects and they only had two body parts. Later that day, I found a nice set of photos on Flickr that someone took of spiders and that got the little one convinced that spiders could be really cute. Really, really!

EDIT: I have to add, it was really fun for me to watch the kids during the hike. No, not the part where they were climbing in places and heights that were pretty scary (gotta let go, gotta let go, gotta let go…) but both boys really hit it off with some of the other boys in the group that were close to their age. They were trying very hard to finagle getting to eat lunch with them, too :) I love it!

More hiking goodness here!
