Advent of the King

You know, last year I was quicker on the draw with the Christmas decor. Day after Thanksgiving, we pulled out the tree and put it up. This year we are slacking quite a bit. Mind you, getting the tree out of the storage over the garage is no mean feat: it involves a ladder and heavy boxes and a doctorate degree in the mathematical study of topology. Ok, maybe just a masters.
So I decided not to pout too much.
Instead, inspired by a link shared by my friend and blessed homeschooling mom Linda, we’re going to try and emphasize Christ this Christmas season.
The link to the study is here. Yes, there’s an advent wreath involved but the study is scripture-based. Since it was put together by a homeschooler, care was taken to make sure that there are things for the little itty bitty kids (non-readers) to do to help them remember each day’s readings.
Here’s our little arrangement. I know the middle one should stand out more, since it does represent Christ. Maybe I’ll decorate the glass later on but for now, it stands in the middle and is lit each day. The other candle that has been lit for Week One stands for prophecy and the promises that God the Father gave His children of their Messiah.
By the way, all the candle holders and candles were half off at Hobby Lobby. The wreath is just a bunch of “picks” from the section where they have all the mini tree decor. I just wound them into a wreath so the candles wouldn’t look too puny on the huge stand. Those were half off too, I think. Hobby Lobby rocks so much, you have no idea.
Also, for the first time we’re going to try to make a lap book to study the different symbols that are commonly associated with Christmas. I found this study that should help us get started. I like the author’s point of view: new problem with claiming or reclaiming a pagan symbol and turning it around to symbolize something Godly. Not unlike Harvest Fiestas instead of Halloween parties, yes?
So this year, we’re going easy on the glitter. Something to think about: without a light source even the shiniest thing can’t glitter. If you’re feeling a little dull, maybe you need to spend a little time under the Light so you can get polished off and glittery again.
Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” Jhn 8:12
