Happy birthday, America! Remember the circumstances that brought about your birth? Some quotes from a few witnesses to the events:

Every citizen should be a soldier. This was the case with the Greeks and Romans, and must be that of every free state.
Thomas Jefferson

Every generation needs a new revolution.
Thomas Jefferson

Our contest is not only whether we ourselves shall be free, but whether there shall be left to mankind an asylum on earth for civil and religious liberty.
Samuel Adams

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Thomas Jefferson

He that rebels against reason is a real rebel, but he that in defence of reason rebels against tyranny has a better title to Defender of the Faith, than George the Third.
Thomas Paine

The regulars are coming !
Paul Revere

Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.
George Washington

I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.
Nathan Hale

The sacred rights of mankind are not to be rummaged for among old parchments or musty records. They are written, as with a sunbeam, in the whole volume of human nature, by the hand of the divinity itself; and can never be erased.
Alexander Hamilton

They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security.
Benjamin Franklin

Rebellion against tyrants is obedience to God.
Benjamin Franklin (he tended to put words in God’s mouth

The Declaration of Independence I always considered as a theatrical show. Jefferson ran away with all the stage effect of that… and all the glory of it.
John Adams

Please don’t read this is you don’t want to hear me ranting about politics. We may not agree.

- This is “running for President” and I am frankly tired of the talk of people’s race and sex.

- Experience is a valid thing to discuss. But I’m a bit peeved by the comparison of Sen. Obama’s experience with Gov. Palin’s. One is running for president, the other vice president. Apples to apples, please.

- “They appointed her on purpose because [division of democratic party, snagging Hillary supporters, etc.]” Well, yeah. They shouldn’t pick someone who can help the ticket pick up the middle-of-the-road folks who pretty much determine who gets the job?

- Sometimes, I really don’t like TV or the internet or the rest of the media. It’s too much about “electability” and not so much the brass tacks anymore. I’m sure that’s just me.
